Mr. C and janiqueel enjoy a day at Suntec city swimming in the pool and playing at the Diggersite.
Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.

Olympic swimmer? Construction site manager? Clearly, Mr. C (Official Child of janiqueel.com) has the aptitude and training for either – or BOTH! He proved he had the chops at the “FUN BY THE POOL DAY” at Suntec City on Saturday. There are all kinds of fun stuff happening at Suntec City. The Official Child and I took advantage of the free trial offer to swim in a great pool and work the realistic construction machines. Mr. C swam. janiqueel watched, coached, and cheered. The observant reader will remember that she suffered a knee injury while sailing with Royal Caribbean a few weeks ago. Yes, it’s frustrating to not be able to partake in my usual regimen of hard-core activities. Yes, the crutches are a pain in the Royal nether parts. Yes, I get help and sympathy from friends and colleagues – e.g. JKJ. Yes, I will survive. Thanks for asking. You did ask, didn’t you?
The Boy Wonder sits on the edge of the pool, then, at a signal drops into the water and paddles competently to the waiting arms of his friend. No doubt about it – he’s a swimmer, and with regular practice, he always will be. All this at the age of two. Remarkable! State Swim School, the organization behind the fun day, has a program for toddlers aged 6 months to 2 ½ years old. Mr. C. started early, and I’m still flabbergasted to see him and his peers fearlessly plop in the pool and paddle away. Before we evolved into apes, were we aquatic beings, I wonder?
For older kids, the State Swim 400 Gold Programme awaits once they reach the age of four years. It’s an eight-stage step-by-step set of lessons culminating in a 400 meter non-stop freestyle swim. This achieved, the swimmer is awarded the State Swim 400
Gold Certificate. Not a gold medal – yet.
Children who have completed the 400 Gold kids swimming classes will be able to demonstrate competence in all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and swim 400m of freestyle non-stop, with the correct breathing and technique.
After our swim, we enjoyed a session at DIGGERSITE where the young construction workers and managers could operate very realistic machines that replicated the real metal monsters that are a part of everyday life in our big city. Once he had donned his high-visibility vest and bright yellow hard hat, Mr. C took control of the machines. My knee brace didn’t stop me from giving it a try, too. Darn good fun! Once I get rid of these crutches, I’m jumping into the time machine, reverting to my inner child, and digging it, baby! Darn good fun!
By the time we had swum and dug, we needed a shovelful of food. That’s exactly what we got with the Shovel Platters delightfully presented on plastic “shovels” the meals complete the construction site ambiance. Our hearty appetite called for the mixed grill platter.
