Janiqueel, long a supporter of and believer in what PLAYEUM does has a look at the many changes happening this month.
We recognise that the role of the adult is essential in our work with children – adults have the potential to be creative facilitators of young people, scaffolding the power of creativity and imagination, and we will work to empower them.A message from Vanness Anne Suhaimi
Most obvious in a list of strategic and system changes for Playeum is a relocation from its bright, art-filled home at Gillman Barracks to a WHOLE NEW WORLD. The Playeum team will lead out of Common Ground @ Bedok. The art, the puzzles, the games, the special programmes, the high-touch and artful play will move into Singapore’s communities to better realize what has NOT changed – the mission:
To champion children of all backgrounds and abilities to be active citizens in their homes, neighbourhoods, schools and society at large, through play and the arts. For them to be active citizens, continued opportunities and platforms need to be created for them to develop transformative skills, 21st-century skills s well as social-emotional skills.
Believing social skills to be the keys to success, Playeum builds on attitudes that stress :
- Critical Thinking
COVID-19 has provided a new awareness of the importance of social skill like these as children and adults venture out ever-so-slowly and carefully into a world that has changed.
As they’ve done since the founding in 2008, Playeum, in 2020, is keen to partner with adults to make relevant collaboration and outreach. In so doing, there is a RENEWED focus on building children’s skills and attitudes to meet new, post-2020, VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) challenges. Complementing this approach is a NEW focus on the adult collaborators to shift mindsets to the skills-based approach to social learning.
To foster this shift, Playeum hopes to:
- Give every child the opportunities, and spaces to be ACTIVE citizens. This means that children ill be given the chance to grow with society in the company of supportive adults who are developing along with them.
- Give every adult the chance to realize their role as creative facilitators in children’s lives. Collaborating with educators, parents, and other adults who work with children, Playeum shows kids and adults the value and rewards of creativity to individual and society.
- Give society “a future generation of creative collaborative communities”. Cultural leaders like the Thought Collective, arts groups (e.g. Gateway Theatre, Singapore Repertory Theatre), social workers, school clusters, futurists, corporations, philanthropists, change-makers, government agencies are all invited into the Playeum circle of communication, collaboration, and creativity.
For Playeum these goals and strategies represent a quantum leap into the new VUCA world. Take a deep breath, make the leap, and find the rewards of swimming with a new current of change through PLAYEUM.
